Abstract

This paper describes research in which 3 motorcycle drop tests were performed in a manner designed to simulate a motorcycle falling to the pavement under actual conditions. The tests were performed on a gridded test surface, so that a video analysis of the entire trajectory of the motorcycle could be completed. Using this method, the authors were able to establish the significance of the deceleration associated with the initial contact between the falling motorcycle and the roadway surface. Results suggest a higher sliding coefficient is warranted for motorcycles that slide for short distances prior to striking another vehicle, as opposed to using the lower average coefficient of friction associated with longer sliding trajectories.
