Abstract

BACKGROUND: Farmer suicide is the most burning issue in Maharashtra. Poisoning is the commonest method used for suicide by farmers. In many studies, middle aged male dominance and pesticide consumption has been noted.

OBJECTIVEs 1. To study pattern of different poisoning cases at tertiary care center. 2. To analyze the data to improve patient care. Study design: Present study is a record based retrospective study conducted at Casualty of Dr. Vikhe Patil Memorial Hospital attached to Padmashree Dr Vithalrao Vikhe Patil Foundation's Medical College, Ahmednagar from 1st January 2014 to 30th November 2015.

RESULTS: Our study analyzed 127 poisoning cases. Present study revealed male domination (88, 69.30%). Most of the cases occurred between age group of 31-40 years (41, 32.28%), followed by 51-60 years (31, 24.40%). Majority of cases comprised of married population (103, 81.10%). The study also reveals maximum number of cases were farmers (62, 48.81%), followed by housewives (32, 25.10%). The commonest poison consumed was pesticide (72, 56.69%), followed by unknown drugs (24, 18.89%) and alcohol (15, 11.81%). The present study reported suicide (86, 67.71%) as commonest manner of poisoning. © 2016, World Informations Syndicate. All rights reserved.
