Abstract

Suicide literally means killing one self. It is defined as an act of killing one self intentionally. Globally, every year, almost one million people die from suicide. Suicide patterns and rates differ in various populations and cultures. Throughout human history numerous theories have been advanced in an effort to explain or better understand why people commit suicide. The choice of method used to commit suicide depends on availability of means, knowledge about lethal effectiveness, and the victim's motivation and intent. There is a need for the health planners and policymakers to take notice of the social stresses that contribute to suicide, and provide crisis management resources to people at high suicide risk. In this study, we made an attempt to explain the methods employed, gender ratio, socioeconomic status, reason for committing suicide, and the age group who is vulnerable for suicide. © 2016 South India Medico-Legal Association.
