Abstract

Most of social workers in suicide counseling tend to experience severe burnout. In the present study, the severity of secondary traumatic stress among Korean social workers for suicide prevention programs was examined and major predictive factors for secondary traumatic stress were identified. The results of a survey conducted with 56 Korean social workers for suicide prevention programs showed that the average score of their secondary traumatic stress was 37.71 points and 53.6% of the respondents showed secondary traumatic stress. According to the results of multiple regression analysis, the degree of exhaustion, personal empowerment, relational empowerment, weekly working hours, and monthly incomes were significantly related with secondary traumatic stress. Based on the study results, concrete interventions to relieve secondary traumatic stress among Korean social workers for suicide prevention were discussed. © 2016 International Information Institute.
