Abstract

Traffic counts on the Croatian road network has been carried out for the past thirty years in various ways. Several types of automatic traffic counters have been installed. A database of five thousand vehicle types organized by physical appearance has been constructed. Examining the data showed that the length of the vehicle is not the only factor that should be considered. In order to create meaningful statistics the number of axles, the wheelbase, and the front and rear overhangs must be considered as well. Without this basic information the management of road traffic is not possible.
