Abstract

Research has shown that suicide reports in the media can lead to copy cat suicides. In October 2014, the intense interest of the Turkish media in the case of two suicides made it essential to handle this issue in terms of journalistic and ethical values. This article attempts to assess the presentation of the suicides of Cem Garipoglu, who was convicted of murdering his girlfriend, and of Mehmet Piskin, who committed suicide after publishing a farewell video on his Facebook page. In the study, the content analysis method was applied to 132 news items about the Garipoglu and Piskin suicides which were reported on the web sites of the newspapers Milliyet, Hürriyet, Habertürk, Sözcü, Radikal, Sabah, Yeni Safak, Star, Zaman and Cumhuriyet. The results indicate that four newspapers showed a sensitive editorial policy and did not report Piskin's suicide or his farewell video. However, it was found that in reporting the Garipoglu suicide, the web sites of Turkish newspapers did not comply with World Health Organization recommendations on ethical principles and reporting on suicide. © 2016, Ahmet Yesevi University.
