Abstract

BACKGROUND: Treating acute and chronic suicidal patients in a psychological crisis or with a mental disorder is a central psychiatric and psychotherapeutic duty. In the context of suicidality, psychopathology, psychodynamics, the psychosocial situation of the suicidal person and the complex structure of suicidal motivation are importent.

METHOD: Research and discussion of the current literature.

OBJECTIVE: Suicidal behavior is discussed from this point of view including comments and recommendations for the clinical management of patients with severe suicidality like "raptus melancholicus" and how to use mechanical instruments in such rare cases. © 2015, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
