Abstract

In cases of suicides with firearms medico-legal estimation of firing distance is of crucial importance. Besides the muzzle imprint, the powder pocket and the special morphology of the entry wound, biological stains inside the weapon's barrel can be a supplemental indicator of a contact shot. These stains can be visualized by endoscopy. The development of this method is described by underlining the advantages of the 0°-view endoscopic optic. The photographic documentation of traces can be realized with bulb exposure. Using an intense light source, the entire pattern of stains is documentable by video. Video endoscopy is a faster procedure of examination and documentation, saving more of the present traces. Examples of stains in handguns and rifles are demonstrated together with corresponding experimental traces in gun barrels. © 2016, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
