Abstract

Unnatural deaths due to violence constitute a major number of medicolegal autopsies. Violent asphyxia deaths are one of the important causes of unnatural deaths. Suicidal deaths were found to be the commonest form of violent asphyxia deaths in our studies and males were the most frequent victims. Violent asphyxial deaths account for 150/732(20.5%) of autopsies performed during the period of study. Suicidal deaths were predominantly noted, 138/150(92%) where death occurred due to hanging in most cases, followed by drowning. Homicidal deaths accounted for 3/150(2%) and accidental deaths accounted for 9/150(6%) of violent asphyxia deaths. Male were the maximum number of victims of violent asphyxia deaths, 98/150(65.3%) and females 52/150(34.7%). Reason for high suicidal rate was unemployment, financial stress and marital discord. © 2016 South India Medico-Legal Association. All rights reserved.
