Abstract

The article aims to present an important link between religion and suicide. In our cultural context the Catholic Church has had significant influence through centuries on the attitudes of society towards suicide, those who committed suicide and their grieving families. Moreover, it has also played an important role in suicide prevention. Research by numerous groups has for the most part confirmed the preventive role of different elements of religion. The recently published document Preventing Suicide: A global imperative by the World Health Organization encourages collaboration of different partners in interdisciplinary research on the phenomenon. Similar interdisciplinary approaches should be taken in Slovenia as well. Theologians need to evaluate their past work and prepare a concrete action plan for further collaboration in the field of suicide prevention. © 2016 Teološka fakulteta, Univerza v Ljubljani.
