Abstract

Use of alcohol is a universal phenomenon. In many societies the use of alcohol during the teenage and adult life is very common. For a large number of youth it may signify nothing more than a healthy psychological experiment.Epidemiological data have shown that a substantial minority of lifetime alcohol users (20%-50%) progress to one or more alcohol problems or become alcohol dependent in due course. The social, economic, and health related costs associated with these conditions are enormous Aims and Objectives: To study the demographic profiles and related details of alcohol dependents. To study the psychiatric co morbidity in alcohol dependents. Material and Method: Fifty patients who fulfilled the criteria for alcohol dependence syndrome (F10.2) according to International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10)1992 and who gave consent for the study were subjected to a detailed psychiatric interview and assessed on different scales.

RESULTS: 66% of the subjects started drinking between 11-20 yrs. 44% of the subjects had co morbid depressive disorder.18% had anxiety related illness.66% had sexual dysfunction. 28% had H/O Anti social activities under the influence of alcohol.

CONCLUSION: In a country like ours where literacy is low the biggest challenge is to increase the awareness among people regarding the ill effects of the alcohol and providing them with de addiction facilities in rural areas. Educating the target segments to form self help groups in the lines of Alcohol Anonymous which will help in preventing relapses. © 2015, Indian Journal of Public Health Research & Development.
