Abstract

So far, the social sciences have cast little light on the issues posed by male ageing. For male identity, giving up work and going into retirement are especial challenges. In life after work, important concerns are meaningful activity and a redefinition of partnership and other social relations. While high old age and progressive physical enfeeblement increase the risk of suicide, the potential of men as family caregivers is widely underrated.
