Abstract

It is often difficult to differentiate between normal sadness and pathological sadness. A climate of trust needs to be created during the consultation, one that helps explore the various affective symptoms and the degree of deterioration in the patient's quality of life and functionality caused by the symptoms. Patients with depression have a 20-fold increased risk of suicide compared with the rest of the population. A proper assessment of the various affective symptoms by the physician is one of the best documented protective factors against suicide. The symptomatology of the depressive condition varies by patient age. It is essential to consider the plausible physical causes that can cause the depressive condition. Over the course of this protocol, we review the various symptoms of the spectrum of depression, updated according to the latest version of the DSM, and review the most important scales that provide greater diagnostic accuracy.
