Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Depression is one of the most common psychiatric syndromes and probably the second most disabling disorder that occurs in the elderly population.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the clinical and epidemiological behavior of depression in the elderly.

METHODS: A descriptive, cross-sectional, from January to December 2013 was designed 134 seniors, 60 and over, with diagnosis of depression according to consultation psychiatry polyclinic "Felipe Poey Aloy" Nueva Paz municipality, Mayabeque Province.

RESULTS: Depression was more prevalent in the female sex in patients 70-79 years and more than half were considered without family support. They prevailed family medical history of suicide attempts and depression like the staff medical history. The fear of death was the psychological factor that is found in almost all depressed elderly. The problems in family dynamics were found in almost all cases, the most common social factor.

CONCLUSION: Making community programs that promote healthy lifestyles for the elderly who suffer from depression designing an intervention strategy taking into consideration the specificity of the study group with a view to preventing and reducing depression.
