Abstract

In this article, Winnicott's concept of breakdown is discussed in relation to Freud's ideas of "actual neurosis." This provides the theoretical underpinning for understanding of severe depression. The case of a severely depressed woman illustrates how the deadened core of the depression is not communicable to an object. The question is raised as to how the psychic ability of perception is hindered. © 2015 The Scandinavian Psychoanalytic Review.
