Abstract

Suicide prevention is a corner stone of psychiatric and psychotherapeutic work. Most of all suicides occur in the context of psychopathology, of psychodynamic course and psychosocial crisis. Only a small number - 5 to 10% - of suicides occur without a psychiatric diagnosis. In Germany up to now we have currently a discussion about assisted suicide and especially about physicians assisted suicide. This current debate is reported and discussed from a point of view of scientific suicidology and psychiatric experience.
