Abstract

Antidepressant prescriptions must conform to good clinical practices, notably regarding the diagnosis of a major depressive episode or another disorder requiring such treatment, as well as the appropriate dosage and duration of treatment. The neurobiological effects of these drugs are still not fully understood: their monoaminergic consequences are only one aspect, being accompanied by neurotrophic and epigenetic effects. Too little is known about the effects of these drugs on the fetus and child, although this does not mean that depressive disorders should be left untreated in women during or after pregnancy, or in children and adolescents. Antidepressants are a means of reducing the risk of suicide among children, adolescents and both younger and older adults.
