Abstract

The study by Trevino et al in this issue of Cancer found that a strong therapeutic alliance between oncologists and young adults with advanced cancer was associated with a lower risk of suicidal ideation, demonstrating the unique and irreplaceable role of the oncologist in the mental health of patients with cancer. Physician behaviors that correlated significantly with decreased suicidal ideation may define a set of essential and teachable elements of a positive therapeutic alliance. © 2014 American Cancer Society.
