Abstract

Suicide is the leading cause of unnatural death. Rates for men are three times higher than for women. For both sexes, suicide rates increase with age. The choice of methods depends on psychosocial, biological and environmental factors. Railway suicide is a particular violent method, accounting for ca. three deaths per day. There are specific behavioural patterns preceding a railway suicide which can be used in railway suicide prevention.
