Abstract

BACKGROUND: Around 90% of people with suicide attempts have suffered from some type of psychiatric disorder. A suicide attempt in the patient's history is an important predictor of higher probability for suicide and together with a psychological disorder belong to main risk factors for suicide behavior.

OBJECTIVES: To monitor which psychiatric diagnoses are the primary for suicide attempts in the group of patients treated for psychiatric disorders.

METHODS: The case study consisted of 201 patients hospitalized at 2nd Psychiatric Clinic of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice during 6 years (2006-2011) after a suicidal attempt from the overall number of 7486 patients hospitalized. The age spread was from 14 to 83 years of age. The case consisted of 86 women, 97 men, and 19 children. The retrospective study was aimed at primary patients' psychiatric diagnoses, seasonality and the way of suicide attempts. The number of suicide attempts, as well as patients' case history was monitored. The χ2 test for independence (goodness-of-fit) was used as a statistics' data processing method. Data obtained from the study were compared with the corresponding Slovak and foreign data together with other available literary resources.

RESULTS: The great percentage of patients (34%) with suicide attempts suffered from affective disorder. This case included 27.5% men and 41% women. Similarly, the group of neurotic, stress relative and somatoform disorders were of high number with more or less no gender difference (25.49% of men, 20% of women). Psychotic disorder patients represented 11% from the overall patients' case (with no gender difference). In accordance with literature the fact is that more teenage girls have had suicide attempts than boys of teenage age from the case of children and adolescents. It concerned mainly demonstrative suicide attempts.

CONCLUSIONS: Same as many other case studies have shown that patients with affective and anxiety disorders have higher probability of suicide attempts. This conclusion was confirmed by monitored case of hospitalized patients at 2nd Psychiatric Clinic in Kosice. Affective disorder, together with anxiety disorders make to over 50% of all suicide attempts. The most common course of action with suicide attempt is an excessive usage of medicines and sharp object injury.
