Abstract

Suicide is a major health problem. In Flanders (Belgium), about 8% (2010 - 84 out of 1,066 suicides) of the suicides are reported with an unknown cause. Further scientific literature reports on the rising incidence of particular ways to commit suicide. In this manuscript, nicotine intoxication, helium inhalation/asphyxiation, carbon dioxide intoxication by fire extinguishers and carbon monoxide intoxication by charcoal burning are reported. Some cases are presented, the literature concerning these methods is reviewed and the influence of internet is discussed. This article aims to increase the knowledge and the awareness of this phenomena in order to improve the registration of these particular methods of suicide.
