Abstract

It is a descriptive-retrospective research design. Scenario: Intensive Care Unit (PICU) of the University Pediatric Hospital Paquito González Cueto Cienfuegos.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize all patients with suicide attempt that required admission to intensive care, in the period from January 1, 2009 through December 31, 2011. The universe was constituted by 163 patients admitted to the PICU for this cause.

METHODology: sociodemographic variables studied, the method used for the suicide attempt and clinical characteristics, obtaining data and statistics department file and the log book entry intensive care. The percentage method was used for analysis by considering appropriate to our research and data were analyzed using SPSS, the results shown in tables expressed in numbers and percentages.

RESULTS: The highest number was in Suicide Attempts aged between 15 and 19 years with female predominance and pre-university school level, as the method used for Attempted Suicide medication intake entirely, showing that 60 % of patients reached the PICU in a coma.
