Abstract

Depression is one of the most frequent comorbid psychiatric disorders in epilepsy. Comorbid depression in epilepsy affects negatively health-related quality of life, increases the risk for suicide and costs of medical care when compared to patients without depression. Unfortunately, affective disorders are underrecognized, and appropriate treatment is infrequent. The purpose of this article is to review strategies used in the pharmacologic treatment of depression in patients with epilepsy, choice of antidepressants, effects of antidepressants on seizure threshold, pharmacokinetic interactions between antidepressant drugs and antiepileptic drugs and psychotropic properties of antiepileptic drugs.
