Abstract

Personality disorders (PD) are serious conditions resulting in considerable suffering and impairment in functioning. According to data from the Swedish National Health Care Register it is six times more common for women in the ages 18 to 34 years to be given inpatient care for PD than for men. The same is true for compulsary care. Every fifth woman in this age group who have comitted suicide have been treated for PD within the last five year period. Guidelines for treatment and care exist but more knowledge and action plans directed to the society are urgently needed.
