Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To survey on the rate of committed suicide in Hubei province in 2007.

METHODS: Data about the cause of suicide/death were sampled from six districts in Hubei Province. We performed descriptive analysis of indexes such as suicidal death rate, the difference between urban and rural suicide mortality, proportion of causes to death.

RESULTS: There were 931 cases of committed suicide in sample areas of Hubei Province in 2007. It included 483 males and 448 females and the male to female ratio is 1.08 to 1. The overall suicide rate is 25.41 per 100000, as 25.87 per 100000 for male and 24.92 per 100000 for female. The suicide rate is 61.25 per 100000 in the age group of 60-65 years, and is increasing with age. The suicide rate in urban is 9.32 per 100000, which is much lower than 36.46 per 100000 in rural areas.

CONCLUSION: In elderly population, suicide rate is much higher in Hubei province of China, and the ratio of suicidal death in rural areas is significantly higher than that in urban areas.
