Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To know the various causative factors behind self poisoning suicide cases. Settings:Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Mayo Hospital, Nagpur. Type of Study: Hospital Based Cross Sectional Study.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pre-designed and pre-tested questionnaire schedule was used to collect data from 89 self poisoning cases. Study variables: Age and sex of cases, their marital status, locality, socio-economic classification and causative factors behind suicidal self poisoning. Statistical analysis: Chi square test, Mean, Percentage.

RESULTS: Incidence of poisoning is observed to be more in males as compared to females. Most commonly affected age group is 15-30 years both males and females. Unmarried population, particularly females attempted suicide by poisoning. Self poisoning cases from urban area were found to be more than that of rural area. Population of lower middle socioeconomic strata was found to be more prone for suicidal poisoning. Interpersonal problems were found to be the commonest causative factors for self poisoning followed by financial and academic problems.
