Abstract

This study was conducted in Yemen during the academic year 2007/2008, and it aimed: (1) to detect the degree to which ideation of suicide is prevalent among students at both secondary school and university levels in Thamar city; (2) to examine the gender and educational level differences. To achieve these goals, the study was based on the measuring tool of suicide developed by Rudd and translated into Arabic by Husain Fayed in 1989. The size of total sample of the study amounted to 2,800 students, (1,189) secondary school students, (595 males) and (549 females). The number of university students is 1,611 - from Thamar University (813 males) and (789 females).

RESULTS showed that only (63) i.e. (5.3%) of secondary schools, (31 males, 5.2%) and (32 females, 5.4 %) had ideation of suicide. With regard to university students only 118 students, i.e. 7.3% (65 males, 5.3 %), and 6.6% (53 females) had ideation of suicide. There was no significance among students in terms of gender and educational level. These results have been discussed within the theoretical frame of the study and review of the literature on the subject.
