Abstract

In the first stage of their artistic careers both Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938) worked closely with fellow artists and focused primarily on the naked female body. This led to regular sexual contact with their models. For both Picasso and Kirchner, sexuality was a stimulus for their creativity. Picasso maintained this synergy all his life, which resulted in successful periods of creativity even at a highly advanced age. In the case of Kirchner, psychopathologies dominated, which hindered him in his creativity and which led finally to his suicide.
