Abstract

Hanging is a form of ligature strangulation in which the force applied to the neck is derived from the gravitational drag of the weight of the body. Hanging has been classified as typical or atypical depending on the location of the knot area in ligature around the neck. If the knot is present on the occipital region it is designated as a typical hanging or otherwise as an atypical hanging. Course of ligature in the neck is one of the numerous factors that determine the cause of fatal outcome in neck compression by the ligature and thus is considered in the evaluation of dying process and pathomorphology of hanging. We report a rare case of ligature mark on the face in a victim of suicidal hanging where the knot was neither located on the occipital region nor on any other part of the neck.
