Abstract

Self-poisoning is the first manner of attempted suicide in France. Recent studies show that the preferred method is oral ingestion. The authors present a case of fatal poisoning by alternate and combined, transdermal and intrarectal, routes. In the case report, the victim used patches of Durogesic ® associated to intrarectal administration of Hypnovel ®. An exhaustive review of medical literature allows them to characterize the differences between the uses made of transdermal fentanyl patches in cases of fatal accidental, suicidal or addictive poisoning. They also show the unusual nature of intrarectal route use. © 2012 Elsevier Masson SAS.
