Abstract

Eleven semi-structured interviews were conducted with Chilean parents whose children had been hospitalized for suicide ideation or a suicide attempt. This qualitative, exploratory study explored the perception of parents regarding their children's suicide risk factors, protective factors and suicidal behavior prior to their hospitalization. The study contributes to the few that exist that focus on the perception of significant others of suicidal patients and demonstrates that parents constitute a valuable source of information. Additionally, the use of a clinical semi-structured interview is proposed to explore suicide risk and protective factors from the perspective of significant others. © 2012 Fundación AIGLÉ.
