Abstract

Introduction, and Materials and Methods: In 1998, the number of suicides increased rapidly in Japan and they have continued at this level since then. This situation presents a very serious social problem in Japan. In the present study, we examined data regarding the monthly distribution of suicide in 10 prefectures with the 5 highest (Akita, Iwate, Shimane, Yamagata and Miyazaki) and 5 lowest (Nara, Tokushima, Okayama, Kanagawa and Kyoto) suicide rates in Japan and nationally in Japan during 32-year period. We also calculated the average number of suicides per day in each month.

RESULTS and Conclusion: During the study period, suicide rates among each men and women tended to be high from March to July; they also tended to be high in September. Therefore, although it is important to carry out suicide prevention measures continuously, they must be strengthened from spring to early summer as well as in early autumn. Suicide prevention measures should also be implemented in cooperation with relevant organizations and citizens. © 2012 Japan International Cultural Exchange Foundation & Japan Health Sciences University.
