Abstract

INTRODUCTION: The rapid increase in suicide since 1998 is a major social issue in Japan. In Shimane Prefecture, Japan, it is also necessary to discuss suicide prevention from various angles.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: This research examined trends for suicide from 1995-2006 in Shimane Prefecture. The number of suicides by sex, age group, and suicide rates in 1995-1996 and 2005-2006 were compared. In addition, this report examined the current state of suicide prevention measures taken in Shimane Prefecture, and further suicide prevention measures are discussed.

RESULTS and Discussion: The total number of suicides increased in 1998, and this trend has continued since, except in 2005. There were more suicides among men during 2005-2006 than there were during 1995-1996. Men in the age groups ages 20-29, 30-39, 50-59, 70-79, and 80 or over had higher suicides in 2005-2006 than in 1995-1996. There were numerous suicides among women in the 70-79 age groups and in those 80 or over in both 1995-1996 and 2005-2006. Suicide prevention measures in Shimane Prefecture have been carried out to some extent. Suicide prevention measures must be discussed in concert among various fields in order to establish more effective suicide prevention measures in the future. © 2012 Japan International Cultural Exchange Foundation & Japan Health Sciences University.
