Abstract

Many types of antidepressant are available. They vary in mode of action and adverse effect profile. The groups of antidepressants are presented together with their mode of action, drug interactions, adverse effects and their use in vulnerable patient groups. This article further discusses briefly the issues of suicide risk, antidepressant time to effect, first-line antidepressant choice and treatment of treatment-resistant depression. Issues faced when switching between antidepressants and symptoms of antidepressant discontinuation syndrome are also highlighted. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
