Abstract

The aim of this study is to better comprehend vulnerability factors for young gays and lesbians and the connection between these factors and their parents' attitudes about their homosexuality. The research was carried out in France with 82 young gays and lesbians. In this group, 66% stated that they have had suicidal thoughts and 31% reported having attempted suicide. These results illustrate the vulnerability of this community. Furthermore, perceiving paternal attitudes as rejecting was correlated with the presence of suicidal ideation and at least one suicide attempt. In the same way, when maternal reactions were perceived as negative, they were correlated with difficulty in social interactions and a strong level of worry. Parents' attitudes towards homosexuality constitute a key element in the high level of distress and suicide risk among young gays and lesbians.
