Abstract

The correlation between professional activity and suicide rates among different professions has not been very well studied so far. Specific suicide rates are available for few occupation groups only. Extended suicide rates are to be found in health care and particularly among female physicians. The workplace might be protective as well as "suicide-supporting". Occupational health physicians are challenged to diagnose suicidal tendencies and to make sure that employees at risk get an appropriate therapy. Furthermore the conditions of work need to be organized together with employers, employees and work councils in order to protect the mental health of employees. Against the background of extended working life as well as increasing sickness absence due to mental illnesses, occupational health physicians ought to accept this interdisciplinary challenge.
