Abstract

Poisoning is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in India. A thorough review of the risk factors helps to decrease the incidence and mortality. The present study evaluates 130 poisoning cases admitted in Dr. P.S. Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital, Andhra Pradesh, India from January 2007 to December 2008. The peak incidence of poisoning was observed in the age group of 21-30 years with male to female ratio 1.09:1. Majority of them were Hindus, married, hailing from rural areas, and belonging to low socio-economic stratum of the society. Agricultural poisons (47.6%) were commonly used. Most of them had consumed poison at home between 6 pm to 9 pm with an intention of committing suicide, and were brought to hospital within an hour after consumption. Mortality was higher in those victims who were brought late to hospital. We suggest for precautions to be taken at various levels like restriction in free sale of the poisons and promoting Poison Information Centers along with public awareness to decrease the incidence and mortality in poisoning cases. ©2011 South India Medico-Legal Society.
