Abstract

INTRODUCTION: suicide attempts have increased before the twenties in past decades.

OBJECTIVES: to identify the risk factors associated with the suicide attempts in adolescents aged 10-19.

METHODS: an analytical study (matched case-controls) was conducted in adolescents with a suicide attempt in the Cienfuegos province during the second semester of 2007. The percentages and arithmetic means were estimated to identify the association we used the Mantel-Haenszel Chi2 test and the odds-ratio calculus, its confidence and signification interval (IC) for α= 0,05.

RESULTS: the association with suicide attempt of following variables was identified: desires to self-damage, the working out of prior plans to commit such act, presence of hopelessness, physical maltreatment, disputes, distrust and poor relationships with parents, family backgrounds of suicide and psychiatric disease, to torment and partner problems, among others. The 9,0 % of study adolescents declared any regret or without critic on the situation.

CONCLUSIONS: there were personal and family factors associated with suicide attempts, as well as a high percentage of adolescents attempting to commit suicide with critics or regret of situation.
