Abstract

Introduction, and Materials and Methods: In Japan, there have been over 30,000 suicides a year since 1998. Suicide is thus a critical social problem. Kawasaki City is located in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. Research on transition and current prevention measures of suicides is an important part of the efforts being made to decrease suicides. In this report, we researched suicide trends during the eleven-year period from 1995 to 2005 in Kawasaki City, as well as suicide prevention measures implemented by Kawasaki City.

RESULTS: The number of suicides in Kawasaki City has increased since 1998, similarly to that for Japan as a whole. Suicide prevention measures in Kawasaki City are being carried out in comprehensive points.

CONCLUSION: Suicide prevention measures must be further implemented in the community. © 2011 Japan International Cultural Exchange Foundation.
