Abstract

In Puerto Rico a high prevalence of depression and suicidal ideation (SI) exists among adolescents. This study examined treatment response to a cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for depression that integrated a protocol for the management of suicide risk. One hundred fifteen adolescents with Major Depressive Disorder participated. Descriptive analyses, t tests, clinical significance and reliable change index analyses, correlations and multiple regressions were conducted. SI at treatment onset did not have an effect on treatment for depression. Thirty-four percent of participants exhibited a reliable change of SI scores from pre- to post-treatment, 89.6% demonstrated clinically significant changes at post-treatment. Hopelessness level and SI at treatment onset were predictive of post-treatment suicidal ideation. Most adolescents with depression and SI treated with CBT significantly reduced their suicidal thoughts.
