Abstract

Stress and burnout are major factors that medical doctors and nurses often have to deal with while in their work environment. Burnout is a loss of will in which motivation is damaged, resulting in an increasing inability to mobilize interest and capabilities. This paper was aimed at identifying stressors, effective coping skills, and the impact that stress has on formal caregivers. Most of the stressors triggering the burnout risk were the result of patient care, particularly with chronic, geriatric and/or unstable patients. Most stressors were the result of management of the unit, notably inadequate staffing. © 2011.
