Abstract

This study aimed at analyzing the main characteristics of women hospitalized for burns in the Hospital Municipal Souza Aguiar - Rio de Janeiro, from 2006 to 2008. This is a documentary analysis with a quantitative approach on the basis of 132 medical records. The following characteristics were investigated: age, place of occurrence, causes, and agents of the burn. The leading age range was 20 to 25 years. The residential environment accounted for 91 patients (68.9%). Domestic accidents stood out as the main causes of burns - 74(56.1%), suicide attempt - 27(20.5%), aggression - 11(8.3%) and work accidents - 9(6.8%), and other causes - 11(8.3%). Leading agents were alcohol - 58(43.9%) and overheated liquid - 26(19.7%). These data are relevant to the context of women's health, especially in the prevention of accidents.
