Abstract

Routine screening at triage can identify potentially suicidal patients, even if their chief complaint is something completely unrelated. Use these practices: • Watch for avoidance of eye contact, a withdrawn appearance, and lack of hygiene. • Take all statements about suicide seriously. • Don't hesitate to ask directly if patients are suicidal.
