Abstract

Treatment of borderline personality disorder frequently leads to hopelessness and helplessness attitudes in therapists. BPD patients are among most frequently hospitalized due to impulsivity and suicidal attempts (with a risk of committed suicide of 10%), but frequent hospitalizations do not lead to positive outcomes. Research on effectiveness of psycho- and pharmacotherapy so far have not led to clear results reflected in treatment algorithms. There is, however, the area of research that shows that effective treatments for BPD have been developed and might be disseminated after more solid empirical support is available. The paper presents an overview of state of art research on diagnosis, ethiology and treatment of borderline personality disorder. © Copyright 2011 Via Medica.
