Abstract

A movie focusing on local culture heralds the artistic and commercial potential of Taiwan's movie industry. The film inspired by the near murder-suicide got its start in 2006, when screenwriter Chen Wen-pin read a newspaper follow-up report about the father and daughter to his pregnant wife in the hospital. The use of black-and- white film also has much to do with the movie's ambience. Filming in black and white, forces directors to take production factors into account that are largely unknown in color movies. Taiwanese works are no stranger to winning coveted titles at major international film festivals. Chen Wen-pin, who also directs films produced by the Luminoso Film Company, as well as acts and writes scripts, believes that the local film industry deserves to receive more investment and resources from the government's economic and diplomatic offices.
