Abstract

Martyrs bear witness to the existence of fundamental, radically unconscious ideals which find their expression in values deemed essential to the community or group to which the martyr belongs. It sometimes suffices that these values be seen as impossible to maintain for the most violent reactions to be triggered, violence against self or others, and clearly intended to underline the absolute necessity of those values. This is equally true in a Christian context and is not limited to the current phenomenon of suicide attacks, even if its expression is dissimilar. These ideals are throw backs to primary Narcissism and are often reactivated and exploited by political or religious leaders for the purposes of their cause. © L'Esprit du temps.
