Abstract

There is still a significant need for optimization in the diagnosis and treatment of people suffering from depression. Especially for depressive males a considerable level of underdiagnosis can be assumed: on the one hand, specific symptoms of "male depression" often remain unrecognized, on the other hand males consult health care professionals less frequently than females. The Regensburg Alliance against Depression has initiated a four-level interventional program, established by the pilot project in Nuremberg, to improve detection and treatment of people suffering from depression. Five years after starting the campaign, suicide rates before and after intervention in the City of Regensburg were evaluated and compared to suicide rates of the county district Regensburg, the county district Neumarkt, and Germany. The results show that suicide rates decreased significantly only in the area of intervention. The reduction of suicide rates was due to a significant decrease of male suicides. Hence, interventions seem to have reached even the male population.
