Abstract

A descriptive study of 80 patients who attempted to commit suicide and were assisted at the Emergency Care Unit of the Comprehensive Diagnostic Center in the period between January 2007 and January 2009 in Araure municipality, (Venezuelan Portuguese state) was carried out. The group between 17 to 23 years old was predominant. The psychopathological profile emphasized the symptoms of anxiety, suicidal ideas, sadness and insomnia. The profile of personality obtained with the application of the 16 PF allowed characterizing the group as emotional with little emotionally unstable, uncertainty, overanxious, distressed, tense, frustrated, and overwhelmed with high levels of anxiety. Poisoning by psycho-pharmacs was the way more common among those patients. The incidence of family history on suicidal attempts and psychiatric disorders was significant. Among the psychiatric diseases, depression and anxiety according to circumstances were predominant.
