Abstract

A lot of drugs may interfere in glucose metabolism and cause hyperglycemia in nondiabetic patients or even drug induced diabetes mellitus with its prolongated use. Hyperglycemic and prodiabetic effects of certain drugs are well-known and they are administered carefully in patients with impaired glucose tolerance or overt diabetes mellitus. However, the others are not known for such effects and their influence on glucose metabolism remains out of diagnostic concerns. Therefore it is necessary to consider the possibility of drug induced impairment of glucose metabolism in every acute state of hyperglycemia. In this article, the authors present a review of the most frequent drugs with hyperglycemic or prodiabetic effects. However, there are still remaining many others that are linked with hyperglycemia, although extremely rare with only few reports in literature.
