Abstract

Protocol 10/66 was used, the visit was done door y door up to 334 elderly people over 65 years old, all of them residents of the community around Ana Betancourt Clinic of Playa Municipality in Havana City, estimating the prevalence of depression and the frequency of their own symptoms individually. The diagnostic algorithm GMS/AGECAT, 10/66 and DSM IV criteria were use as well. The results show a high prevalence of depression GMS/AGECAT (14,9 %), whereas the frequency of mayor depression (2.7%) is less. More frequent depressive symptomatology includes agitation or psychomotor retardation, sleeping disorders, fatigue, suicide ideas and appetite disorders. Studies about the depression based on elderly population could be and a starting important point for therapeutics and preventive interventions once the occult morbidity related to depression has been identified.
